Malmö Museer was founded in 1841 and is the south of Sweden’s largest museum. Over the years the museum has expanded and facilities have been added, today Malmö museer contains of Malmöhus Slott at Slottsholmen, Teknikens and Sjöfartens hus and Kommendanthuset. Ebbas Hus, Fiksehoddorna and Wowragården in the south of Sallerup also belong to the museum. Malmöhus Slott at Slottsholmen was founded in 1938 and was from the beginning a nature historical museum. The castle itself dates back to the 13th century. It has belonged to different countries, been used as a fortress and from 1848 to 1909 the castle was a prison were Axel Danielsson, the founder of the magazine Arbetaren, was imprisoned. Today is Malmöhus Slott our most well preserved renaissance castle and contains a museum that tells us all about Malmoe’s history. There’s also an aquarium and a large nature section that fascinates children with its big collection of stuffed animals. In 1960 the technical museum was built were you can experiment with light, sound, speed and movement. You can also look at old jet-engines and learn about Malmoe’s rail road. In 1978 Sjöfartens Hus was opened were the main attraction is the submarine U3. Kommendanthuset that is located next to Sjöfartens Hus contains of Fotografins Hus that holds a number of exhibitions, seminars and lectures. In 2002 Malmö Museer was rewarded as the museum of the year för their innovative work with multicultural issues and their open-mindedness in current social problems.
