Malmoe is shock full of good vegetarian restaurants and cafes. Especially around Möllevångstorget you´ll find Asian restaurants with tofu dishes, vegan cafés and falafel stands at every corner. At the vegetarian organic grocery store Astrid & Aporna you can buy vegan pizza slices, and Debaser and Vinylbaren offer delicious vegetarian burgers. Fried foodsA must see in Malmoe if you´re vegetarian is Chinese Restaurant Vegegården. Here everything is vegetarian or vegan. The classic Chinese dishes is based on soyproducts with taste of salmon, chicken or beef. Their buffet is very popular where you can revel in fried shrimp and crab, coconut stew with beef, and fried noodles and rice. If you´re not full you can order fried banana with soy ice cream for dessert. Home cooked mealsIf you´re after a younger, more intimate atmosphere and home cooked Swedish food, you should visit Metro at Möllan. They always have at least two well made vegetarian courses on the menu. As you listen to break beats played by Metros dj, you can sip your wine and enjoy the vegetarian wallenbergsteak with lingonberries, sautéed onions, sauce and potatoes. Indian Haweli is a stone´s throw from Möllevångstorget and offers a wide range of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Our advice is to order the authentic thali consisting of three vegetarian dishes and naan bread! Indian restaurants is also a good choice if you are gluten- and lactose intolerant, just make sure your food have been prepared without ghee, butter. At Krua Thai, Restaurant Asien, Indian Curry Hut, Green Mango, Lily Ahn and the other Asian restaurants in the neighbourhood you can always choose tofu or vegetables as base in almost every dish. Vegan fare and buffetsIf you´re on the lookout for a good cafe you should head for Glassfabriken at Kristianstadsgatan. Almost everything is vegan, and on Sundays they serve a healthy vegan brunch. Try the grilled sandwich with red pesto, seasoned tofu and melted vegan cheese – you are guaranteed to be satisfied! Glassfabriken also offers vegan pancakes, pies, pastries and cakes. You get to pick ingredients from a menu that offer everything from beetroots and artichoke crème to cous-cous salad and feta cheese. Green GourmetGourmands should visit Malmoe Konsthall´s (Malmoe Art Gallery) restaurant SMAK. Here they make the best green dishes in all of Skåne. Malmoe is Swedens falafel capital with the tastiest and cheapest falafel rolls that usually costs between 20-30 SEK. You can spice up your falafel with seasoned aubergine, halloumi or feta cheese at places like Falafel no1 or Jalla Jalla. The king of all fast food – the burger, is available as a delicious vegetarian version at fast-food stand Fidelito near Malmoe Opera house. For 38 SEK you get a filling soyburger with fresh vegetables and homemade dressing. If you´re into old fashioned hot dogs you should visit the fast-food kiosk at S:t Knuts Torg where they offer soy-hot dogs with vegan dressing for 23 SEK. Enjoy! Published 2008-11-10 14:50 |
