The Public Park
|
Folkets Park is situated by Amiralsgatan, near Möllevångstorget in Malmoe, and is the first community park in Sweden. The park fast became a popular meeting point for the workers at that time. From 1926, Folkets Park changed their character from a political meeting point to an amusement park and started to build carrousels and other attractions. During summertime, the park is still one of the most popular hang-outs. Everybody’s parkThe park is to a large extent the children’s park, there’s much for the youngest to experience. The terrarium has exotic animals, such as lizards, snakes, crocodiles, spiders and turtles. In the children’s farm Arken you can pet guinea pigs, chickens and sheep or go pony riding. In the southern end of the park there’s a large playground and a paddling pool, which in wintertime is turned into a skating park. The Tivoli has the largest Ferris wheel in Northern Europe, and from here you have a lovely view over Malmoe and Oresund. Mojitos and musicIn the northern part of the park, you’ll find Debaser with the most popular patio during the summer, and many popular clubs and live concerts. Cuba Café is just opposite Debaser, and here you can dance to Latin American music whilst enjoying a mojito. A larger outdoor stage is located by one of the grass plots where different popular artists often perform. You’ll also find Amiralen, with Malmoe’s largest dance floor, and Moriskan with its seven oriental crenels is available for rent for various parties and conferences. Markets and moviesAn annual event in the park is the children’s flea market. Here, the kids gather all of their old toys and trade them with others. Another is the Merkado market, where twenty-something local designers shows their work. You see everything from jewelry, hand printed bags and t-shirts, illustrations and organic clothing. There is also a harvest market in the fall. See www.folketspark.se for upcoming events. Published 2008-11-11 19:25 |
